BMW wins second-ever MotoGP title

With three wins from five races, it’s not a surprise that BMW Motorrad have won the title. 

The Italian outfit were first to the title in 2013, and then won the first two races of this year’s season. 

But it’s the third victory in four races this year that is truly a landmark. 

“To win three times, in a season, it feels great,” BMW’s team principal, Michael Schumacher, said.

“To have a championship like this, it is incredible. 

I have never won the championship before, but this is the first time that I have achieved it.”

It’s also the third time BMW have won it in five races. 

That record is broken by Suzuki, who won the MotoGP championship in 2008, and Yamaha, who came in second in 2013. 

And the fifth time is also the first for the Japanese manufacturers, who were runners-up to Yamaha in 2014.

“We are really proud of this result,” said Suzuki team principal Yoshinori Inoue. 

It means Suzuki now has a total of 18 victories from 20 races, which is a third of the total for BMW.

“It’s a really important result for us,” said Yamaha team principal Kazuhiro Hirai. 

While Honda and Ducati were runners up in 2014, they have now won the second race of the season, as well as the last four races.

The Suzuki-Honda partnership has won three championships in a row, while the Ducati-Ducati partnership is the only other team to win the title twice. 

After three years of struggle, Yamaha have finally returned to the championship, following a three-year absence. 

They had already won the World Championship title twice in the 2015 season, with the victory at Jerez the first of the latter. 

However, it was the victory in Qatar in March that saw the Italian team finally get the win they wanted. 

Kawasaki, with which Suzuki have also been rivals for the championship for the last two seasons, had just beaten Honda to the first championship victory in the championship. 

Hirai said: “We had two races where Honda came out on top and we lost a race. 

So we have to be careful not to do that again.” 

But that is exactly what happened in the second lap, and it gave Honda a huge lead. 

When Honda overtook the Ducatis in the last corner, the Ducats rider, Alex Cossack, managed to get his front wheel out of the garage and had to be pulled out of his bike to get back on. 

He said: “I’m really happy to have achieved this result.” 

However that doesn’t mean Yamaha will get to claim a second title for the first three years after they take over the title from Honda in 2020. 

Team owner Yoshihiro Mori has also announced plans to retire from the championship this year, and will take up a job with Honda. 

Mori, who has been in the title picture since 2006, said:”I’ve had a fantastic career, and this has been the most important thing to me in the past three years.” 

The Ducati team are confident that they can return to the top, but there are some who believe they will struggle. 

Former MotoGP champion, Valentino Rossi, said it was unlikely they would get back into the title race this year. 

“[I] think it is very unlikely for the team, the riders, the drivers,” he said. 

Rossi said: “[It’s] a very difficult title, with a very big number of races.

It’s a very tough championship.”

If they have a great season this year [with] the best of them, we will be in the hunt for the title, but if not, then I think they will be out of it this year.” 

Honda has also admitted it will struggle to compete with Yamaha in the standings this year and will not be in a position to win a title with Honda, but it has still managed to make some big moves. 

In April, Honda announced it would start the year by reviving a partnership with Honda engine supplier Honda engines. 

A year later, Honda has announced that it will launch its own fuel cell car, dubbed the Project L. This means that Honda will be the only manufacturer of fuel cells to have a customer in the Moto3 championship.

However, Honda’s team boss, Yoshinobu Ito, said there would be “many surprises” in the race schedule this year as the teams attempt to stay competitive. 

Speaking at the end of the Moto GP season, Honda team boss Ito said: “We have to look at our objectives, what is the priority for us this year? 

“We will do our best to achieve our objectives.”
